What is Chiropody & Podiatry?

Brook Green Clinic offers a comprehensive Chiropody service offering the medical solution to your foot pain.

IMage of Biomechanics, Orthotics and Chiropdy clinic taken at Brook Green Clinic HammersmithChiropody is the field of healthcare devoted to the study and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and the "anatomical leg". Internationally such practitioners are known as Podiatrists - there is no difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist.

In the UK, the term Chiropody is still used almost exclusively to describe the general foot health practitioner who will treat your ingrown toenails or take out that troublesome corn.

Podiatry is more commonly used to describe an advanced practitioner who specialise in a particular area, for example Biomechanics or Surgery.

Your Podiatry appointment will consist of:

  • The initial consultation phase will involve analysis of posture and gait. Diagnosing your area of concern and the factors that have lead to its presentation, including: pelvic torsion, ligamentous laxity, muscular weakness, habitual standing on one leg, hereditary or ankle and forefoot problem. Investigation into the side-effects over pronation has had on the body. We will also assess the impact your feet are having else where in the body such as knees, hips and lower back.
  • Treatment and prescription of a 3week exercise plan to build the muscles of the feet and leg.
  • Analysis of effectiveness of exercises on degree of pronation.
  • Prescription of orthotics and advice on long term exercise.
