What is involved?

It is normal to have a course of acupuncture treatment with the frequency and length of treatment depending on your individual condition.

The first session is usually a combined consultation and treatment. This will last between 1 and 1½ hours depending on what you are seeking treatment for. Sometimes it will be easier to timetable this as two shorter sessions of 45 minutes each, but either way the charge is £55. Subsequent treatments last approximately 45 minutes and cost £45. If you are unsure about whether to have acupuncture and would like to discuss it with the practitioner a free 20 minute consultation can be arranged.

In the first session a comprehensive case history is taken. This will include questioning about the condition for which you are seeking treatment, questioning about general bodily functioning (sleep, appetite, digestion etc.), your medical history and, where appropriate your personal history. This will be followed by a short physical examination which includes observation of your tongue and pulse. Subsequent sessions will normally begin with a few questions about your response to the previous treatment and an examination of your pulse and tongue.

In a typical treatment between about 4 and 20 needles will be used. These may be inserted and removed immediately or left in for up to half an hour. The needles are very fine and when they are inserted a dull ache or tingling sensation is normally felt. Your pulse will be examined through treatment as this gives immediate feedback about the effect of the needles.
